Why I Started Eating Starches Again

Hi Three to Five Tribe! I am excited to share that I am working with my NTP again and although I am not quite ready to share the reasons as to why, I will share that I am eating some starches for the first time in three years. Yep, that’s right people. I haven’t had certain types of starches in three years. No oats, no rice…I know, I know, but due to my Whole30 lifestyle, I have consciously chosen not to eat them.

Practicing a plant-based lifestyle, I thought I was eating all of the right foods and even though I was eating plenty of nutrient dense foods, I wasn’t consuming enough calorically dense foods. I knew certain carbohydrates were good for you, but I had completely written off almost all starches even with my active lifestyle  That is until my NTP recently recommended I begin adding certain types of starches back into my diet at least twice a day.

Due to their inflammatory effects,  I was hesitant to eat starches, but my NTP recommended some starches that have been known to be easy on the digestive system. Starches like:

  • Arrowroot
  • Basmati, Jasmine or white rice
  • Cassava
  • Corn
  • Gluten-free oatmeal
  • Plantains
  • Potatoes of any kind
  • Pumpkin

*All of these foods should be organic and Non-GMO

Despite my hesitation about eating these foods again, there was no denying my body (and my health) clearly needed these foods way more than I could have ever known. I had no idea what me, my body and my health was missing. After eating starches for 3-4 days, I had more energy for my morning workouts, less afternoon brain fog, better, longer and uninterrupted sleep and overall I just felt whole again. Without starches in my diet, I felt like I was missing something, but I never could figure out what that was exactly.

As many of you already know, I always encourage you to think of your body like a science experiment, (and for good reason), so once again I encourage you to reconsider your health, listen to your body and pay attention to any signs your body may be sending you and if it is, perhaps it’s time to reintroduce some foods you have stepped away from and see how your body responds. You will never know unless you try and who knows, your body and your health may thank you for it!
