Craving Broccoli? It’s a Thing, Here’s Why

Listening to Your Body

Ever since working with a nNTP, I have really been able to tap into my body’s wants and needs. It’s been quite the adventure so far, and don’t get me wrong, some days are super rewarding and other days can be super frustrating, but I’ve learned when I take the time to silence my mind and listen to my body, it never leads me astray. Your body is actually a lot smarter than you think, we just rarely give it the opportunity to show us how smart it really is. Instead, we listen to others, emulate what our friends are doing or worse, we refer to the latest fad diet. Why are we so quick to look to outside sources for advice when our bodies are constantly sending us signals on what it needs in that moment? It’s mind boggling!

Why I’ve Been Craving


Recently, my body has ben craving broccoli and not just like as a side at dinner. I am talking like 2-3 bunches of broccoli for dinner 2-4 days in one week’s time. Now granted I have been focusing more on a plant-based lifestyle recently, but never have I wanted that much broccoli in such a short amount of time. Don’t we usually crave foods that are sweet or salty, not vegetables. What gives?

After doing some digging and reading through some research, I learned it’s possible to crave dark leafy greens like broccoli, cauliflower or kale when your body needs more nutrients, specifically calcium, iron, magnesium and/or Vitamin C. After working with my NTP this past fall, I learned that when your body is stressed, it burns through certain vitamins and minerals quicker than others (I am looking at you Vitamin C and magnesium). No wonder I was craving boat loads of broccoli. I was heaving a super stressful week mentally and emotionally, so it made perfect sense why my body was craving bunches of broccoli.

I am pretty certain I ate roughly 7-9 heads of broccoli that week, so clearly my body was super stressed, but how amazing is it that my body knew what to ask for in order to better combat that stress? Like I said before, the body is super smart, we just need to take the time to listen to it.

The next time you have a food craving, take a moment to really tune in to that craving and take the opportunity to find out what your body is really asking you for. Maybe it’s a night in instead of a night out, maybe it’s a book and a bubble bath instead of a bottle of wine or maybe it’s just a long walk in nature instead of an intense sweat sesh at the gym. Whatever it may be, give your body the opportunity to tell you what it needs and then actually listen to it! Sometimes that second part is more difficult than the first part, but I believe you can do it. Hey, I can and I am Type A (more like Type A++). See what I mean?!

  1. Thank you for this! I have been craving broccoli like there is no tomorrow. I am eating bowls of it at breakfast and dinner. Your rationale makes so much sense. A lot of stress around here.
