My Latest Food Obsession

Hi Three to Five Tribe! If you have been following my blog from the very beginning, you know I have had my moments of falling head over heals in love with certain foods. Whether it be cacao nibbs, Brussel sprouts or purple asparagus, when I find something I love (like really love) I just can’t help but share them with you all, my loyal readers. This is why today I want to share with you my latest food obsession, nutritional yeast.

Nutritional Yeast

What exactly is nutritional yeast? Nutritional yeast is completely different from live yeast or brewer’s yeast. Grown from sugar-cane, beet molasses or wood pulp, nutritional yeast is part of the fungi family (like mushrooms). Nutritional yeast has the amazing ability to create its own amino acids and vitamins through its natural fermentation process, which generates unique nutritional qualities including:

  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • B Vitamins like Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pyridoxine (B6) and Cyanocobalamin (B12)
  • Folic Acid

Pretty, cool, right?! It doesn’t end there though. Nutritional yeast is packed with essential amino acids. Remember, the body cannot produce essential amino acids on its own, which means you have to get them through your food! Nutritional yeast is also free of sodium and sugar and is low on the glycemic index so it helps control blood sugar. It’s also made of probiotics, which helps keep your gut healthy and your immune system strong.

The Best Thing About Nutritional Yeast…

The reason I love nutritional yeast is not because of its nutritional properties or its incredibly low price at Trader Joe’s ($2.99 per bag – you can find it in the baking/spice aisle), I love nutritional yeast because of its taste! It literally tastes like a tangy parmesan cheese, which some would call an umami flavor, but I call it cheese and for someone who doesn’t do well with dairy, it’s been life changing.

I like to sprinkle nutritional yeast on my roasted vegetables like broccoli and asparagus, but you can basically put it on anything:

    • Avocado
    • Avocado Toast
    • Baked Potatoes
    • Salad
    • Salad Dressings
    • Soup
    • Sandwiches
    • Sauces
    • Popcorn
    • Pizza
    • Anything you would want to put cheese on you can put nutritional yeast on

If you are looking for a new seasoning to try or a new flavor profile to add to your culinary arsenal, I highly recommend you try nutritional yeast, your tastebuds will thank you.

Falling in love with nutritional yeast three to five meals at a time,
-ox
