Hi Three to Five Tribe! For the past two months I have been practicing a Keto lifestyle. (Think 80% of daily calories coming from healthy fat sources). Yes I know, cue the gasps, but remember, dietary fat does not make you fat! Healthy fat sources are actually really good for you. If you need a reminder, here are ten reasons why fat is your friend.
Today, I want to geek out on the science of Ketosis, so you can understand the true science behind this amazing process. If you have ever wanted to know what’s the deal with Keto, then this is the blog post for you! Grab some ghee and get to reading.
The Science of Keto
Glucose is a basic sugar. It is produced every time we eat and the body relies on it as a fuel source. Out of all the macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrates), carbohydrates supply the largest amount of glucose to the body because they are immediately converted into their basic sugar state upon consumption. This is because carbohydrates are so easy to break down by the body. The human body is amazing, but let’s be real, it can be pretty lazy when it wants to be. Given the choice of working hard or hardly working, the body is going to choose hardly working every time it can, which means it is going to go for the the carbohydrates first. This essentially means you are a sugar burner. You are getting your main source of energy from glucose, which is a basic sugar, therefore you are a sugar burner. #hatetobreakittoyou
In the body, when there is an absence of carbohydrates, there is simultaneously an absence of glucose, which means there is a larger amount of dietary fat in the blood stream. Time out for a sec: This is presuming you are eating more healthy fats daily. I am talking about a lot more healthy fats, like 180 grams of healthy fat or more. Remember, Keto means getting 80% of your daily calories from healthy fat sources. More avocados and coconut oil please! Okay, back to your normal programming…When there is a larger supply of fat in the body, the body begins to retrain itself to use fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates. Your body is essentially becoming a fat burner by using fat sources as its main form of energy as opposed to glucose, when you were considered a sugar burner.
Without the presence of carbohydrates in the body, the liver begins to metabolize a lot of dietary fat (I am referring to healthy fat, so back away from that cupcake). When this happens, the liver begins to produce ketone bodies aka ketones. These ketones are then used as an alternative source of fuel for the liver, brain, and ultimately the entire body. When you start producing ketones you have reached a state of ketosis. #congratulations Your body will now start using fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates, thereby making you a fat burning machine.
Believe me, this is not as easy as it sounds. I enrolled in a six week program that provided the proper resources, tools, coaching, and support to successfully switch my body over from a sugar burner to a fat burner and it was worth every single penny.
If you are interested in learning more about the program, I highly highly recommend you check it out here.
Now go eat some healthy fats!
