10 Reasons Fat is Your Friend

Hi Three to Five Tribe! A while back I had some health & wellness podcast recommendations for the tribe. One in particular has become my new favorite, “The Nourished Podcast” with Meg Doll and Shawn Mynar. I highly recommend you give it a listen sometime!

I have learned so much about health and happiness listening to these two lovely ladies, but one thing I have learned that has really resonated with me is the Ketogenic life. Keto is based off of low carbs and high fat, so think less grains and fruit, but lots of bacon, butter, coconuts, avocados, macadamia nuts, and all of those other high fat foods you thought you should stay away from.

Fat has gotten a bad reputation throughout the years and I am hear to tell you fat is your friend. Here are ten reasons why fat is good for you.


10 Reasons to Eat More Fat

*For the purpose of this blog post, fat is referring to healthy fat sources, so this is not an excuse to eat more cookies or cupcakes people!

#1 Fat gives you energy. Fat is your body’s preferred source of energy, so when you give your body more healthy fat, you are essentially telling your body to use it for fuel, which means you will burn more fat! 

#2 Fat keeps you satiated. Healthy fats keep you fuller longer. If you eat a meal and are hungry an hour later, chances are you did not eat enough fat at your most recent meal. Here are some healthy fat recommendations to try: Cold water fish like salmon (make sure it is wild caught and not farm raised), grass fed beef, nuts and seeds (especially macadamia nuts which are all fat), unsweetened coconut, butter, ghee, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, lard, tallow).

#3 Fat makes you smart. Healthy fat is essential for brain health. Our brains are primarily made up of fat and adequate amounts of fat are needed to reduce inflammation and increase brain function, including increased neurotransmitter production such as serotonin, the happy hormone, and who doesn’t want to be happy?

#4 Fat regulates blood sugar. Blood sugar dis-regulation can cause the body to store excess body fat, lead to adrenal health issues, and can disrupt sleep. Fat keeps your blood sugar stable throughout the night, so when you wake up in the middle of the night, often times it is a sign your blood sugar has dipped. Having a healthy fat before bedtime can keep your blood sugar stable and will keep you sleeping soundly through the night.

#5 Fat makes cells strong. Fatty acids from fats are used to build the outer layer of our cells. The stronger our cells, the lower our inflammation, which is the driving force behind disease.

#6 Fat flights inflammation. Essential fatty acids, specifically Omega 3s, are anti-inflammatory. Keep in mind the “essential” in essential fatty acids, means we can only derive them from food, which means they can not be produced by the body on its own. Help your body out and give it a hand or in this case, fat!

#7 Fat regulates hormones. Cholesterol is the building block for every hormone our bodies produce and cholesterol comes from fat, so if you want to get your hormones in check, eat more fat! Insider Insight: Hormones control everything from thyroid function to menstrual cycles, to hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance or PCOS, so in order to avoid any of these – eat more fat!

#8 Fat keeps your heart healthy. As mentioned above, cholesterol is the building block for hormones, and healthy cholesterol levels lead to a healthy heart! ❤

#9 Fat improves metabolic function. Since fat can balance hormones,
decrease insulin, and improve our cell health, fat leads to improved overall metabolic function.

#10 Fat absorbs vitamins. Fat allows for the proper absorption of vitamins, specifically Vitamins A, D, E, & K. All of these vitamins are fat soluble, which means in order for them to be beneficial for you and your health, they need to be in the presence of fat to work in your body. Recommendation: Add spinach leaves and avocado slices to your salad. The fat in the avocado will help you absorb the minerals from the spinach!


Remember, fat is your friend, not the enemy, so don’t be afraid to stock up the next time you make a trip to your local grocer!
