“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” – Hippocrates
Hi Three to Five Tribe! Did any one else read NPR’s most recent article, “Food as Medicine” published this past week? If you have not then I highly recommend a read. It will only take five minutes, so go read it now!
Food As Medicine
Now that you have read it (okay I know some of you have still not read it), so here is a brief recap.
Multiple times a month, doctors in Huntington Beach, California can be found wandering the aisles of local grocery stores helping people learn about food in order to make better food decision when grocery shopping. How cool is that?!
The “food-as-thy-medicine movement” has been around for years, but is gaining popularity among physicians and medical institutions as a part of patient treatment instead of solely relying on medications. By launching nutrition programs, such as “Shop with Your Doc,” doctors are working to prevent and even reverse the effects of disease. Finally! Proactivity instead of reactivity. Remember:
“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.” – Anne Wigmore.
I know I am no doctor, but I do usually spend my weekends roaming the aisles of Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, just not in a white lab coat. iAlthough you may not find me near your nearest end cap dishing out nutrition advice or offering healthy swaps like the doctors in this article, though maybe I should…I am going to give you my grocery shopping prescription anyways.
Stick to the outer perimeter of the grocery store – that is where all the real, whole foods are located. Live food supports life and you are alive, so eat real food!
See how much you can fill your cart with from the perimeter of the store and then leave the inner aisles for last. Who knows, you may not even need anything from the inner aisles with the amount of delicious and nutritious food you have already stocked up on.
Now…who wants to go grocery shopping with me? (And do you know where I can get a white lab coat?) Kidding…kind of.
